At-Home Dental Care Tips

Here are some ways to improve your at-home oral care routine.

Visiting our Grand Rapids, MI, dentist Dr. Aretha Yamusah twice a year important if you want to maintain a healthy smile; however, a lot of your everyday habits can also play a major role in the health of your teeth and gums. Wondering if your current oral care routine is up to snuff? Here are some tips to follow (if you aren’t already) to promote optimal oral health.

Follow the 2X2 Brushing Rule

Almost everyone brushes their teeth but do you brush your teeth at least twice a day? If you have braces, or if you are particularly prone to cavities, you may benefit from brushing after meals and snacks, but the majority of people can get away with brushing just twice a day for at least two minutes each time they brush.

Use Fluoride Toothpaste

There are so many different kinds of toothpastes on the market, catering to everyone’s different oral health needs. By and large, most people should be using a toothpaste that contains fluoride, a mineral that helps strengthen enamel and may even reverse early signs of decay. Of course, if you are at risk for gum disease, have had gum disease in the past, are noticing yellowing in the teeth or other issues, our Grand Rapids, MI, family dentist can also recommend other types of specialty toothpastes that will cater to your unique needs, as well.

Floss Once a Day

Be honest with yourself: How often do you floss? If you want to remove plaque and food from between teeth while also keeping your gums healthy then the best habit to start adopting is flossing. Everyone should be flossing their teeth once a day, ideally before brushing their teeth at night. If you need a little flossing-technique refresher course, check out this helpful video from Colgate (it’s great for all ages!).

Use an Antimicrobial Mouthwash

Everyone can benefit from using mouthwash. Of course, those who are more at risk for cavities and gum disease will find that adding an antimicrobial mouthwash to their everyday oral care routine will decrease bad bacteria and improve their oral health. Swish the mouthwash in your mouth for about 30 seconds (do this about 5-10 minutes after you’ve brushed your teeth). You may also choose to use mouthwash after snacks or lunchtime, especially if you don’t have a toothbrush handy.
